Coffee Zoning is a new strategy that NAEB says will improve the Rwandan exports.
The National Agriculture Exports Development Board says that when the new strategy is inclusive of local farmers and the sub-sector bases, then the country could increase exports.
Coffee Zoning will include the 270 washing stations and factories around the country to improve the quality of coffee produced and exported to countries like the US, Europe and Asia.
NAEB coffee division manager,Celestin Gatarayiha, says that farmers will be given fertilizers, pests, and skilled on proper harvesting techniques.
Rwandan coffee celebrated
The 2017 National Coffee Day was celebrated in Ngoma sector, Nyaruguru district, to promote coffee drinking and farmers were sensitized to improve coffee quality and production.
Through the ‘coffee zoning’ initiative, NAEB hopes to boost coffee quality and quantity.
A coffee tree can produce 10 kilogrammes.
Rwanda wants to increase exports from 19,000 tonnes to 23,000 tonnes of green coffee (hulled and dried coffee) worth Rwf58 billion this year.
There are more than 350,000 coffee farmers and over 89 million coffee trees grown on 56,000 hectares in the country.
